The Subtractive Color System (CMY):

 

òUses colorants (pigments or dyes).

 

òUses cyan (C), magenta (M), and yellow (Y) colorants to subtract portions of the white light illuminating the object to produce  other colors.

 

òBegins with a white substrate (usually). When combined in equal amounts, cyan, magenta and yellow colorants produce the appearance of black.

 

òC + M + Y colorants (unequal amounts)= BLACK
